WEB CONTROL
Web Control: Precision and
Efficiency in Material Processing
Web control is the foundation for the highest product quality and maximum speed. It ensures correct material tension (tension control) and the exact lateral alignment of the web (web guide systems). With our systems, we guarantee you a smooth and waste-free production process.

The control of material webs in industrial processes is a decisive factor for product quality, the reduction of waste, and the maintenance of high machine speeds. Modern web control essentially comprises two core areas: tension control to maintain constant mechanical tension and web guide systems for the exact positioning of the material edge. At IBD Wickeltechnik, we offer integrated systems that seamlessly combine these areas, thereby ensuring optimal production reliability.
The importance of tension control
Constant tension control is essential to avoid problems such as material wrinkles, web breaks, length differences, or an untidy winding structure. Regardless of whether you work with paper, films, nonwovens, or other flexible materials: any fluctuation in web tension has a direct negative impact on processing quality.
Our tension control systems utilize precise load cells that continuously measure the actual tension of the web. These measured values are sent to advanced tension controllers, which adjust the braking or driving torques at unwinders and rewinders in real time. This ensures that the preset target value of the web tension is kept constant across the entire winding diameter — from the full to the empty core. The result is uniform material guidance and perfectly wound rolls that can be further processed without errors.
Precise web guide systems
The web guide system – often also referred to as edge guiding – corrects the lateral position of the material web to ensure that it always runs centered into the subsequent processing stations (such as printing units, cutting units, or laminating machines).
A complete web guide system consists of three main components:
- Sensors: High-precision sensors such as our SU ultrasonic sensors (for opaque materials) or SIR infrared sensors (for transparent or semi-transparent materials) detect the exact position of the web edge.
- Control unit: The intelligent controller, such as our ReSmart MWG-22, processes the sensor signals and immediately calculates the necessary correction movement.
- Actuators: Robust pivot guides (WG web guiding systems) or linear actuators (AT actuators) execute the mechanical correction quickly and reliably by shifting the web laterally or adjusting the entry angle.
These precise corrections occur in milliseconds and ensure that your production can run at maximum speed without misalignments or cutting errors occurring.
By combining cutting-edge technology in tension control and web guide systems, we provide you with the necessary foundation to sustainably optimize the efficiency, quality, and reliability of your entire production line. Rely on our system solutions to process the most demanding materials safely and precisely.
