Why Corona Treatment?

The main function of corona treatment is to activate the surface of films, which leads to an increase in surface tension, measured in dynes per centimeter (dyn/cm). This is achieved through corona treatment systems that act on the surface for a specific time and with a defined power.

For the treatment to be successful, the surface energy of the plastic materials must be at least 10 dyn/cm higher than the surface tension of the liquid to be applied. Normally, plastic films have chemically inert, non-porous surfaces with low surface tension. This results in them being less receptive to the adhesion of substrates such as printing inks, adhesives, and coatings.

Polyethylene and polypropylene are among the plastics with the lowest surface energy and are therefore most frequently subjected to corona treatment to improve their adhesion properties. However, it is important to note that corona treatment is not limited to these two materials, but can also be used to improve the adhesion capability of virtually all plastics as well as some non-plastic materials such as aluminum and paper or metallized surfaces.
